Results from round 4:
Loek van Wely, Netherlands (2667) – Magnus Carlsen, Norway (2862) 0-1
Levon Aronian, Armenia (2797) – Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Poland (2744) draw
Fabiano Caruana, Italy (2820) – Wesley So, U.S. (2762) draw
Hou Yifan, China (2673) – Anish Giri, Netherlands (2784) draw
Baadur Jobava, Georgia (2727) – Ivan Saric, Croatia (2666) 0-1
Tejmour Radjabov, Azerbaijan (2734) – Ding Liren, China (2732) 0-1
Vassily Ivanchuk, Ukraina (2715) – Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, France (2757) 1-0
Carlsen beat van Wely convincingly after the latter had played the inexplicable 25.g5? giving away the b2-pawn unnecessarily. Aronian and Wojtaszek had a queen ending which ended in a draw. Caruana was understandably tired after the long game with Giri yesterday and didn’t mind a relatively short draw with So after 31 moves. Hou Yifan and Giri also agreed a short draw after only 20 moves. Jobava continues to play his highly creative, original chess and above all risky chess. This time he went with his king all the way to e4 in the middlegame. It didn’t turned out well as he lost against Saric. Radjabow had to play his own favourite defence when he met Ding Liren who played the King’s Indian very successfully scoring a convincing win. Ivanchuk played another marvellous game with the white pieces versus the Sicilian Defence. He won amazingly in only 30 moves against MVL and is now in the lead. Here you can enjoy another recap.
Note that round 5 begins 15th of January at 14.00 CET (8:00 AM EST).
