KommenteraDen sjunde upplagan av Sinquefield Cup börjar idag och nyheten för året är att tävlingen, som för övrigt är den starkaste i U.S.A, spelas med 12 deltagare istället för 10. I första ronden har vi dessa möten: Ding Liren-Wesley So, Levon Aronian-Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Magnus Carlsen-Anish Giri, Ian Nepomniachtchi-Wiswanathan Anand, Hikaru Nakamura-Fabiano Caruana och Sergej Karjakin-Shakhrijar Mamedjarov. Carlsen är givetvis stor favorit och vill förstås revanschera sig efter att inte ha tagit de snabbare partierna, som spelades för några dagar sedan, på blodigt allvar. Det lär han dock göra denna gång om han inte ska förlora sitt anséende som världsmästare och undvika förödmjukande skriverier i norsk massmedia som inte riktigt förstår skillnaderna på blixtschack, snabbschack och klassiskt schack. Enligt Carlsen är det nämligen den sistnämnda spelformen som är den seriösaste. Sinquefield Cup saknar dock tyvärr dragserie vilket skulle ha lyft den spelformen ett steg i rätt riktning. Glenn Ek på Sportförlaget i Västerås visade ett genuint intresse efter en förfrågan av författarna. Schack har de senaste årtiondena alltmer betraktats som en sport med den snabbare betänketiden så schack bör klassificeras även i det facket. Andra populära kategorier är annars spel, vetenskap eller konst. Frilansjournalisten och schackälskaren Robert Okpu har tillsammans med språkläraren och IM Thomas Engqvist arbetat med boken i ur och skur och den har sänts till tryckeriet och planeras att säljas under SM i Eskilstuna 5 juli. På Schack.se finns djupintervjuer med Okpu och Engqvist som var för sig ansvarat för biografi- respektive partidel. Det finns också en fotodel med fotografier som de flesta aldrig har sett tidigare. Boken bör alltså tilltala tre kategorier, de som gillar biografier, de som vill se Uffes angreppspartier med moderna, pedagogiska kommentarer och de som vill se de nya fotografierna. Läs kommentarenEn av världens genom tiderna starkaste spelare, Ex-världsmästaren Vladimir Kramnik, 43 år, har på Tata Steel-turneringens hemsida meddelat att han avslutat sin professionella karriär. Bakgrunden är att han tycker han uppnått allt som kan uppnås som schackspelare och nu vill ägna sig åt att undervisa schack för barn. Han nämner att det han varit med om som schackspelare varit ovärderliga mänskliga erfarenheter. Vi som följt Kramniks schackkarriär och upplevt milstolpen i schackhistorien när han besegrade Kasparov år 2000, med remivapnet Berlinvarianten i Spanskt, får vara tacksamma och nöjda över alla de partierna han producerat ända fram tills nu och önska honom lycka till och all välgång med sina framtida projekt. Jonas Dahlgren KommenteraDen 48:e upplagan av Rilton Cup har startat igång och som vanligt är det ett starkt startfält med hela 26 stormästare och 34 IM. Sammanlagt är det 161 deltagare i Rilton Cup. De övriga tävlingarna Rilton Elo och Rilton 1800 har 153 respektive 85 deltagare. Det höga deltagarantalet säger något om Rilton-tävlingarnas popularitet. Det är nog ingen nackdel att Rilton spelas i centrala Stockholm på Scandic Continental mittemot Centralstationen. Rilton-tävlingarna pågår traditionsenligt från och med idag 27 december till 5 januari med fridag på Nyårsdagen. Livesändningar kl. 15.00 (rond 5 och 9 kl. 12.00) med Fiona Steil-Antoni som värd flankerad av Harry Schüssler, Ulf Andersson och Jonathan Westerberg i nämnda ordning under separata dagar.

Re: FIDE World Chess Championship London 2012
Chess Promotions Ltd has been in discussions with FIDE since February 2010 regarding the staging of the WCC in London. A € 50,000 deposit was paid to FIDE to secure an option on the WCC 2012 match as negotiations commenced and finance was sought.
Having secured the necessary funds, on July 21st 2010, CPL sent FIDE a formal offer and a detailed commercial contract to stage the next WCC match in London with financial terms similar to the 2010 WCC match at Sofia.
Unfortunately agreement could not be reached in the autumn. Following more discussions in London in January, CPL asked FIDE to accept the offer by Saturday 29th January 2011. No such acceptance was forthcoming. Therefore, with regret, CPL has withdrawn its offer in time for the next Executive Board meeting which starts today in Turkey in order to give the EB clarity and the opportunity to consider alternatives. The timeline to stage a WCC match before the Olympic Games in May 2012 is now too short.
CPL will continue to stage top class events in London. Dates for the 3rd London Chess Classic will be announced shortly. We have registered our interest with FIDE in staging events such as the World Rapid Championship and World Blitz Championship in London and will continue to work on bringing commercial sponsorship to chess in order to benefit our associated charity Chess in Schools and Communities.

För några dagar sedan skickade GM Magnus Carlsen brev till FIDE där han avsade sig sin plats i den fortsatta VM-cykeln, som har till mål att utse en utmanare till Världsmästaren GM Vis. Anand. I dag kom svaret från FIDE. I detta framgår det att GM Alexander Grischuk (2771) från Ryssland kommer att ersätta Magnus om den senare inte ångrar sig.
FIDE statement concerning the Candidates Matches 2011
FIDE respects that every player makes his own decisions and regrets that GM Magnus Carlsen has expressed his desire to withdraw from the upcoming Candidates Matches. It is always a big loss for any event when a player of Magnus Carlsen’s strength is not participating. FIDE’s policy is to review regularly the World Championship cycle after consultation with the top world players. At this point in time, the current cycle is in its final stages and it is not possible for FIDE to change its regulations. In the case of GM Magnus Carlsen not participating, according to regulations GM Alexander Grischuk from Russia will be his replacement.
The match system for the World Championship has been in place for around a century with some slight variations such as in 1948 or 1999-2007 when round-robin or knock-out tournaments were also used to decide the world title. FIDE has always been sceptical about World Championship matches instead of tournaments. Ten years ago, FIDE established that the World Champion should not have any privilege when entering the World Championship Tournament (knock-out or round-robin), in accordance with the current suggestions of GM Magnus Carlsen. After 2007, FIDE discussed the format with a number of top players and many of them, including former World Champions Anatoly Karpov, Gary Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik still preferred a match to decide the winner of the title instead of a tournament. FIDE accepted this change and returned to the classical system of a World Championship Match but without the privilege of the World Champion keeping his title in case of a tie.
As a matter of principle, FIDE cannot change its regulations upon the wish of a single player, even if this player is the World Champion or the No. 1 or No. 2 of the world ratings. On the other hand, FIDE is always open for suggestions which can be applicable in the future and which would also support or increase the marketing value of the World Championship.

Re: Improper Appointment of Five Vice-Presidents at the 2010 FIDE Congress in Khanty-Mansiysk
Dear Sirs,
We, the undersigned member-federations of the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (“FIDE”), write to protest the appointment by FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov of five FIDE Vice Presidents at the 2010 FIDE Congress in Khanty-Mansiysk, in violation of the FIDE Statutes and Electoral Regulations.
Article 9.6 of the FIDE Statutes states: “At the conclusion of elections for the Presidential ticket, the President shall be entitled to nominate 2 additional Vice-Presidents and no more, as the 2nd and 3rd Vice-Presidents…” (Emphasis added). Pursuant to Article 2 of the FIDE Electoral Regulations, “[t]he nomination and confirmation of the 2 appointed Vice Presidents shall be made in the General Assembly immediately after the election of the Continental Presidents. After the appointment of the 2 Vice Presidents, the individual elections of 3 additional Vice Presidents takes place.” (Emphasis added).
Over the formal protest of the Georgian Chess Federation, Mr. Ilyumzhinov appointed on the last day of the 2010 FIDE Congress in Khanty-Mansiysk not two but five Vice Presidents, all of whom are his political allies or supporters. This is a clear violation of Article 9.6 of the FIDE Statutes. Further, these nominations also violate Article 2 of the Electoral Regulations as they were never subject to “confirmation…in the General Assembly,” and they did not take place “immediately after the election of the Continental Presidents” as the Continental Presidents were elected on 29 September 2010 whereas all five appointments occurred on the last, sparsely attended, day of the Congress (3 October 2010). Finally, the “individual elections of the 3 additional Vice Presidents” did not occur “after the appointment of the 2 [nominated] Vice Presidents,” as required by Article 2 of the Electoral Regulations. Instead, the elections of the three elected Vice-Presidents took place on 30 September – 1 October, long before the improper appointments of the five Vice-Presidents.
We consider these actions to be serious violations of the FIDE Statutes and Electoral Regulations, which raise doubts about the care, independence and fairness with which the 2010 Elections were run. It has been widely discussed and appears from the factual circumstances that these improper appointments were promised and made as a reward for those who aided the Ilyumzhinov Presidential ticket in the 2010 FIDE Presidential elections. It is inappropriate for the FIDE President to create additional posts in contravention of the FIDE Statues, and to fill these posts with supporters using a process that violates the FIDE Statues and Electoral Regulations, to advance his chances in the election. Correcting this violation of the FIDE Statues and Electoral Regulations requires that FIDE (i) immediately remove all five improperly appointed FIDE Vice Presidents and (ii) ensure that the proper process pursuant to Article 2 of the FIDE Electoral Regulations is followed in the “nomination and confirmation … in the General Assembly” of the two Vice-Presidents that the FIDE President is entitled to propose under Article 9.6 of the FIDE Statutes. At the very minimum, three of the five incompliant appointments must be revoked. We request an answer to our letter by close of business on Monday, 1 November 2010. We reserve our rights to take further measures in the absence of a timely and adequate response.

Concurrent with the Anand-Topalov world chess championship match, FIDE held its 2nd quarter Presidential Board meeting on April 22-23 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
In his report, President Ilyumzhinov emphasized that his recent visits in Mongolia, Lebanon, Central African Republic, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam served the aim of activating chess in those countries and promoting regional co-operation. The Board accepted Central African Republic and Senegal as new provisional members of FIDE to be confirmed by the General Assembly.
The Presidential Board acknowledged and supported the decision of Deputy President Makropoulos to postpone the first game of the world championship match by one day under the unusual circumstances.
Among the more than 60 items on the agenda, the Presidential Board devoted special attention to the forthcoming Chess Olympiad and discussed the preparation in details. The organizer will offer free charter flights from several cities for the teams to ensure easy access to Khanty-Mansiysk. FIDE calls the attention of the federations to the strict deadline of May 20th for registration.
The Presidential Board acknowledged and approved the decision of the Women Chess Commission to give the Caissa Award for the best woman player of the last year to Nadezhda Kosinsteva (Russia). The Board was also informed about the ongoing efforts of FIDE and the CNC company to promote chess and bring in new sponsorship.
FIDE will be represented by a delegation at the SportAccord meeting in Dubai where FIDE will continue its effort the promote chess into the Olympic Games.
