Chesslovers Academy: Simulation in Chess – Turning Books into Strength | Part 1 | IM Thomas Engqvist
In this video, IM Thomas Engqvist, introduce one of the most effective chess study methods he has used throughout his career: simulation training (also known as solitaire chess or mono chess).
This is the first video in a series devoted to simulation—a method that closely resembles the way airline pilots are trained using flight simulators. Instead of passively playing through games, you actively make your own decisions at every critical moment before comparing your choices with those of strong players or the author’s analysis.
Over the past 30 years, this approach has played a significant role in my own development as a player, trainer and author.
Among the classic books discussed in this series are:
Leonard Barden – How Good Is Your Chess?
Max Euwe & Walter Mühring – Ich Test mich selst (I Test Myself)
Neue Schach-Teste (New Chess Tests)
Bent Larsen – Testa din spelstyrka (Test Your Chess Strength)
In this video I discuss:
What simulation training actually is. Why it is such an effective way to improve. The skills it develops. Its advantages and limitations, based on my own experience. How you can incorporate this method into your own chess training.
If you are looking for a practical way to improve your calculation, decision-making, positional understanding and overall playing strength, simulation training is well worth exploring.

If you would like to take your chess studies further, consider becoming a member of Chesslovers Academy Advanced. Membership costs only $5 per month and gives you access to a growing collection of carefully selected lessons and training material.
The philosophy of Chesslovers Academy is not simply to watch more videos or collect more information. The aim is to assimilate knowledge from the great chess books and transform it into practical playing skills.
By studying deeply, reflecting on ideas and applying them over the board, you gradually turn theoretical knowledge into intuition, better decisions and stronger practical results.
Even one carefully studied video can provide material for weeks of productive training. The emphasis is on depth, understanding and the ability to use what you have learned in your own games.
