In this video, I, IM Thomas Engqvist, explore the books and chess ideas of Aron Nimzowitsch (1886-1935) and explain how and why his work has changed the way I understand chess.

Nimzowitsch was one of the most important figures of the Hypermodern movement, and his books continue to offer fascinating insights into chess strategy, positional play and practical decision-making.

I begin with The Blockade (Berlin, Leningrad 1925), discussing some of the important questions we should ask when studying this book and trying to understand Nimzowitsch’s ideas in depth.

I then move on to the first part of My System, where I discuss Nimzowitsch’s fundamental elements and explain how I approach these concepts in my own studies.

These books will be included and discussed in Chesslovers Academy, where we will work systematically with Nimzowitsch’s ideas,

I then continue with the second part of My System, discussing the most important concepts and Nimzowitsch’s practical application of his system in his own games.

These studies will be part of Chesslovers Advanced, where we will go further into the ideas and their practical application.

I also discuss Nimzowitsch’s greatest tournament success in Karlsbad 1929, and his tournament book, which provides further insight into his theories in practical play, particularly his Hypermodern ideas.

Finally, I mention several other books than can help you gain a deeper understanding of Nimzowitsch’s system and his games.
