In this episode of my Top Endgame Books series, I present the 90th endgame book that I recommend: Winning Chess Endgames Just the Facts! by Grandmasters Lev Alburt and Nikolai Krogius.
The edition in my library is the revised 2005 edition, published in New York. First released in 2000, this highly regarded work aims to present the most important endgame knowledge in a clear, practical, and accessible format. Rather than overwhelming the reader with extensive analysis, the authors focus on essential positions, key ideas, and practical techniques that every serious chess player should know.
Drawing on the rich traditions of Soviet chess instruction, Alburt and Krogius sought to make fundamental endgame knowledge available to a wider audience. The result is a compact and practical manual that remains useful for club players and tournament competitors alike.
In this review, I discuss the book’s strengths and weaknesses, its instructional value, and how relevant it remains in the modern era of engines and databases. Is Just the Facts! still worth studying today? Join me as I examine the 90th endgame book in my recommended series.
